*FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE*
CLARKSVILLE, TN (June 10, 2025) — News was released yesterday that Congressman Mark Green plans to resign once the Republican “Big Billionaire Bailout” bill passes into law. Congressman Green represents Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District, which includes Montgomery County. This resignation impacts citizens significantly since we will be required to hold a Special Election to find a new member of Congress.
This is the second time that Mark Green has threatened to quit Congress. In 2024 he announced that he would not run for re-election, but then changed his mind after hearing from colleagues in the Republican party and President Trump. During the election, he made promises to voters that included reducing the national debt. He has broken that promise through his support of the Republican budget bill, which is estimated to raise the deficit by $ 2.4 trillion.
Mark Green is wasting taxpayer money as well as Montgomery County voters’ time. He is leaving his constituents in the lurch to take a lucrative position in the private sector, proving that he chooses his own financial gain over the public interest. Said Montgomery County Democratic Party Chair, Allie Phillips “Rep. Green’s announcement could not have come at a more detrimental time. His constituents are worried about losing access to their Social Security and healthcare. Meanwhile, he’s leaving us out to dry so he can pursue a better opportunity. He shouldn’t have rerun in 2024, and he should have to finish his term. This is a coward’s way out of facing the backlash from a bill that he knows will hurt Tennesseans.”
As Democrats, we condemn his lack of character in choosing to leave his position before the end of the term.
