The Montgomery County Democratic Party Condemns Bill Lee’s Special Session Racist Power Grab to Redraw Tennessee’s Congressional Maps

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TN – Tennessee Governor Bill Lee officially called a special legislative session beginning Tuesday, May 5, to redraw Tennessee’s congressional districts. This comes on the heels of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, gutting key protections under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, making it significantly harder to challenge discriminatory, racist district maps.

Statement from Montgomery County Democratic Party Chair, Christine McKinney:

“District lines are not just political boundaries. They determine who has power over critical issues such as public education, healthcare access, jobs, infrastructure, public safety, and the everyday needs of the people of Montgomery County.

This is a racist and dangerous power grab. While residents of Montgomery County struggle with real challenges every day, state Republicans are focused on rigging the system to protect themselves and appease Donald Trump. This is an attack on democracy, fair representation, and the voices of our communities. The Montgomery County Democratic Party stands firmly against any attempt to dilute voter power or undermine fair representation. We are committed to organizing, mobilizing, and fighting tooth and nail to ensure every voice is heard and every community is fairly represented.”

MCNTDP plans to refute the redistricting efforts in every way legally possible by encouraging voter turn out and engaging in discourse with our elected officials during the special session.
